Gerry is my first cousin. This is the first of her writings that I've read, and it was a great read. She told of some family history that I didn't know about, but has a way with words that makes the read fun and entertaining. The "Uncle Will" that she mentioned in the dedication, is my father. I knew he had property in Arkansas, but never knew that Uncle Ray and his family lived there. Gerry and her family have always been dear to me and my family, and I am thankful for this memory of her time. I enjoy reading this type of history.Product details

The Palmetto House eBook Gerry Lites Watkins Reviews
This is very informative and interesting book about a family living in the era of the Great Depression. It is a very inspiring story that can be enjoyed by everyone.
I love memoir and this is an excellent one. Gerry Lites Watkins is my husband's cousin. I have met her once. I really liked her book because it was full of beautiful descriptions both of feelings, and of the terrain involved in a seven year stint of homesteading in a 1930s wilderness with her family when she was a child. Gerry, a veteran of twenty-seven years of travel writing, knows how to keep a reader's interest. The part of Arkansas, not far from Texarkana, where the Lites family homesteaded had hot humid summers and long freezing winters. It was during the time of the depression and they had to raise all their own food which was sometimes impossible or difficult to manage. For long stretches the children were not able to go to school because they lived too far from town. For three semesters their mother did the best she could to teach them. The roads were often impassable and the terrain was filled with mud and thick vegetation. The family met few people from day to day, and yet they were able to form a community and survive. I'm glad I got to read it because it is not only a fine memoir, but a good historical document as well.
I enjoy reading family histories as they are seldom tainted by the world of politics. I was not familiar with life in Arkansas during the Depression years and I was pleased to learn of it, especially how families coped under trying conditions. The writer has an excellent writing voice and this short book will be a delight to read.
